PAEDIATRIC REHABILITATION DEPARTMENT

The Pediatric rehabilitation department at GGAMCMH is an outpatient therapy unit that provides special services including Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Speech therapy, Behaviour Modification therapy, Developmental therapy, Hydrotherapy, Group therapy and Psychological counseling for children with special needs. The care delivered is wide-ranging and interdisciplinary by a team of highly skilled medical and allied health staff. The expert team comprises of Pediatricians, Developmental Pediatrician, Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Speech therapist, Behavioural therapist, Special Educators, Developmental Nurse Counsellor and psychological counselor. The practitioners have an array of skills in handling children who require developmental (Motor, Cognitive, Language and Psychological), neurological (Autism, ADHD, Learning disabilities, behavioural disorders) or orthopedic (Cerebral Palsy, Erb’s Palsy, Dystrophies and Atrophies) treatment and rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation programs at GGAMCMH aim to maximise the ability of the child to participate in activities at home, school and the community. Families play a key role in the rehabilitation program. Based on the diagnosis by the pediatricians, an individual assessment is conducted, and a personalised program is designed to achieve specific goals in areas such as mobility, self care, communication and community involvement. Therapy is guided by the goals established by the family and the rehabilitation team at the beginning of the program, with progress recorded throughout. We collaborate with NIMS, Neyyatinkara,TVM and St,John’s Medical College, Bangalore for specialized consultation and guidance.

We emphasis Early Identification, Early Stimulation and Early Intervention, as crucial components for effective developmental support. The high risks infants in our NICU are monitored and screened regularly for any developmental delays, allowing for early identification of any functional limitations as soon as possible. Subsequently the child is referred to pediatric rehabilitation centre for early stimulation- providing age appropriate activities and experiences that support cognitive, emotional, and physical development or early Intervention- implementing targeted strategies and support to address identified challenges and promote healthy development. These practices ensure children get the support they need to thrive and reach their full potential. Early comprehensive care can make a significant difference in their overall progress and well-being.

In addition, our Rehabilitation centre provides crucial support for children with a range of developmental and behavioural challenges, including Autism (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive disorders (ADHD) and Cerebral Palsy. By addressing these needs from infancy through adolescence, we ensure that children receive the appropriate interventions and support to foster their development and improve their quality of life.

Our rehabilitation centre is enriched by two exceptional services: a sensory garden and hydrotherapy, which are standout features of our rehabilitation programs. For children with special needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, sensory processing disorders, and Cerebral Palsy, the sensory garden provides a holistic experience by engaging all seven senses, leading to significant improvements in their quality of life.

Hydrotherapy, on the other hand, offers valuable benefits for children with Cerebral Palsy, motor developmental delays and sensory motor coordination disorder by helping them relax, reduce spasticity, enhance mobility and range of motion, improve balance and coordination, support sensory integration, and strengthen functional skill.

The duration and frequency of therapy sessions are tailored to each child’s unique needs, with treatments designed and thus we help them meet developmental milestones, overcome sensory challenges, and improve self-care, play, and self-regulation skills. For services beyond our scope, we refer children to other Multispecialty Hospitals and Medical centres for further evaluation.

After a preliminary assessment, we direct children with Intellectual Disabilities and those requiring Vocational Rehabilitation to other appropriate institutions. Our services are available Monday to Saturday, from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Accommodation is offered to children from remote areas, enabling them to receive continuous therapy in a cost effective manner.
